I can finally afford a new rig, so far I've decided on: An E8400 dual core cpu ATI Radeon HD4870 1GB 2-4 GB ram, depends on the overall price. 250-500 GB hard drive, also depends on overall price. I need advice on motherboards, cooling and power supply. Any other suggestions regarding the gpu or cpu are also welcomed. Edited by tomregev on 21-09-2009 12:58 |

To help keep the price down you probably need to go for a P45 board that uses DDR2, 4Gb should be affordable. Also are you going to overclock? If yes you will need to spend a bit more on board and cooler. Maybe an ASUS P5Q or Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR with Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro. If not the stock cooler and a cheaper board would be fine. I think the HD4870 is a bargain card atm. Would probably go for 550 - 650w power supply, go for modular cables, much easier to make neat job. It's about 500 pounds. Though the components here are some times more expensive than in the uk. |

Found something similar to what I want and at a bargain price, but it comes with a Gigabyte G31M-S2L board and a GEFORCE 9500GT 1gb. how do those hold up against the P45 and HD4870? |

ATI 5800 are coming to the store end of this month so the ati 4000 series cards will be dropping in price more in oct/nov so if your not in a compulsive buying mood you might save your self a bit of cash of the total cost of the system. |

Well I'm depressed now. The one I have in mind at the moment is: E8400 3 GHz Gigabyte Radeon 4870 1024mb Asus p5Q 2GB Ram Hitachi 500mb sata1 16 mb Midi atx case Stock fans. Not as good and with local pricing it costs 542 pounds That's from a shady store as well, on a proper one it'll cost even more. |

Thanks but I already made the order, everything specified above but with 4 gb ram and a Geforfe 9800 gt. Had to settle for it because of the Radeon's heat issues, combine that with the local climate and I would have to pay way more than I wanted on cooling.

Great, always exciting when stuff on order but what heat issues do you mean? I have a 4870 and it runs very cool even overclocked to 800/1000. The old 3870 was hot running. Doesn't matter anyway the 8800gt will serve you well if only i had something funny or clever to put here........

Well a lot of reviews I read mentioned heat issues with the series, but what sealed it for me was the opinion of the guy I bought this from, he's one of the specialists in gaming computers around here and says that from his experience keeping a 4870 running smoothly will require a whole lot of extra fans and will be very noisy. Also the 9800 is cheaper so it's not like his trying to earn some extra cash. I'm pretty sensitive when it comes to heating and I know how annoying it can be, during the summer I actually had to open my case and have the AC on in the room to keep my cpu running. |

shame you had to order so quick as the prices will start to tumble somewhat now the ati 5770 & 5750 have hit the shelves as budget parts. the 577o hits simlar levels of performance as the the ati 4870 & the nvidia GTX260 |

For you guys maybe, they won't have the 5770 here for a while and I really doubt the local suppliers will drop their price just to conform with the overseas price. |
