i have an old hp compaq dx6100mt which i use for torrents and a little browsing in the living room. I have pimped the innards a little with a 7600gt and 2 gigs of ram making it adequate for a little tf2 and donkey porn. BUT its friggin LOUD and the cases is smashed(i think i chucked it out the window once). So i need to make it quiet and look better in the living room. Any suggestions? i think its the cpu fan that is noisy. BTW its a peice of shit so small amounts of cash only, no water cooling, lian li madness thank you muchly |

Could be case, cpu or psu fan making the racket. CPU fan depends on type of cpu you have, try http://www.quietpc.com they tend to put dBA ratings on their fans. When you find a few you like, if your not happy with the price try http://www.scan.co.uk If your case is big enough, you may get away with a big fanless heat sink and a 120mm case fan, just depends what cpu you got. Bigger the fan quieter it is. Also check your bios, you may have a Qfan option or something similar, if this is off, then the fan will run at max rpm. If its on the speed is regulated depending on heat I think. Edited by ShiftyJaffa on 12-04-2008 09:09 |

Pretty much what Jaffa said. The only other thing would be a new graphics card but to be honest, if its only TF2 and the odd bit of browsing that you do, then your 7600gt is fine. |

cheers dudes. i've checked bios, no such settings. I've opened it up and its the cpu fan for sure, squeals like a mofo. hardware is fine for what i use it for, just need asthetics and noise control. i guess i'll get some kinda silent cpu fan, although that means faffing about with thermal paste which is a pet hate of mine. also an inch thick layer of dust does not help im sure |

My pc is pretty quiet. The one thing that is loud as hell is my dvd drive. Whenever im playing a game that requires a disk its loud as fuck. The other thing was my graphics card, cos i had that set to full speed. i changed it to dynamic (dependant on temperature) and that made quite a difference. |
