new machine required
Don Pedro
dudes i am a little out of it when it comes to desktop hardware but i feel the need to get myself a new machine. Should i go Quad core or dual core top end?
DDR2 or 3? thinking about a gts 512. Using a samsung 32lcd as monitor so resolution is maxed at 1360x768.
unbelievably i am running a P4 with 2gigs ram and 7600GT. I buy the cheapest HP boxes for work and thats what i take and use at home as well.
anyone else got someting as crusty and loud as mine? it bloody deafeningAngry

ddr2
quad core if u can afford it

CenTinela
Quad core, 2Gb of good ddr2, and a GTS would be a nice comp.

If not, a GT is really nice too.

And im still with a P4 3.2, 512ram and 6600

Whats your budget?

Is it just for gaming?

Don Pedro
yeah, pretty much for gaming and regular ms office stuff. budget about 900 i guess, i would have thought that would be enough...?
I have put machines together in the past but i'd prefer to buy the thing complete
any ideas where? any recomendations? cheers for the advice

Tim
You'll be able to buy an excellent machine for 900. I spent just over £400 on mine at the end of summer, it runs TF2 on the highest settings at 1280x1024 perfectly smoothly. I bought all my parts from ebuyer, they seem pretty good, but I would always build the computer myself. No idea where to get pre-built computers...

I got mine at the end of summer from http://www.cougar-extreme.co.uk/ did a load of looking around and they had the cheapest that I could find for prebuilt that had all the things I wanted. Still pretty expensive though and their delivery date is stated as so many different things its actually about a week from order confirmation. Not had any trouble with it so far, those bits I have had trouble with were my own fault for now ordering the right stuff (need another fan at some point)

gori11a
Yeah go Quad Core if u can afford it and stay ddr2 as ddr3 would blow nearly 300 of your budget.

I always build myself, that way u know exactly what hardware has been used.

If you don't fancy that just ask whoever builds it to spec (model no.s etc) whats inside so you can research.
if only i had something funny or clever to put here........

Don Pedro
thanks for the responses. i took Raminis choice and went for cougar extreme. they talked me into going a little over the top(i talked myself into actually) but I should get my hands on it next week.

That pc could run Crysis at full without much lag
And that's crysis, it eats quad cores for breakfast and then some.

TF2 will be 60fps no problem, you'll be set for a while with that, since most games don't even have optimisation for more than 2 cores yet!

Yeah, 2 X 8800GTS is a very strange choice... certainly not the best use of money IMO.

But it will be an amazing pc Smile Enjoy!

Do you mind me asking just how much it did cost?

TBH it's not that strange, it's the new G92 Architechture GTS, so it's faster than the GTX afaik.

I'm not talking about the choice of card, I'm talking about him choosing 2 of them. Why not a single 3870x2... or a single 8800 ultra.

850W??!!!!

Tricky choice between 2gb 8500 and 4gb of 6400 for less money...

gori11a
Don't buy OCZ GameXStream, very noisy:mad:
if only i had something funny or clever to put here........

4gb upwards is nice in 64bit os(show me the apps lol)... you can add more RAM later..

850watt PSU allows an addtional extra x2 gfx card , raptor for raid 0 or some big ass storage... the kit listed should overclock nicely if that route is considered Grin replacing the stock HSF with Thermalright Ultra-120A CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775) £25.84 inc VAT

But this is all plain nonsense if Don Pedro would rather not have to tinker round with kit & make it somebody elses problem by buying a custom built system Smile

sick is on the money, i can't be arsed to mess about and build the stuff myself, much rather someone else do it, if anything goes wrong i can bollock someone and get it sorted(it includes a 2 year warranty)
I know i kinda went OTT with 2x 8800GTS especially at the low res my monitor handles but i will get another big screen(or 2) in the not too distant future and games only get more extreme all the time. give it a year and crysis will look dated
it arrives next week so i'll give you all the lowdown (i bet you can't wait)

on the new rig now. its niiiiiiice. i put it up to 4gigs ram xp only sees 3 and a bit but i'll probably go vista in a year. the 8800 gts is a fuckin MONSTER card and with 2 in there i'm gonna struggle to put anything in the spare pci slot, any recommendations for a good external sound card?
i have yet to test this machine graphics wise, install of crysis is tomorrows job Smile
