Advice on a new gfx card
Abunai
Now, I consider myself quite techy but some of you guys are even beyond my standards so I thought I would post here before going on a spending spree Grin

As my previous card decided to melt, and I am increasingly fed up running at 800x600 on a old ATI x300, I have rummaged enough cash for a decent card.

Main contenders for my price range were the 8800 GT and the Radeon HD 4850 (the latter being the reason for my questions.)

I've found numerous sites that sell the HD 4850 for the same price as a 8800GT, and the HD 4850 has beat even the 9800 GTX in benchmarks and has been biting at the 9800GX2's ankles in some Shock.

So I was leaning towards the HD 4850
(http://www.ginger6.com/sapphire-21132...30898.html) rather than a 8800GT.
Opinions?

I was also considering waiting for a HD 4870, since benchmarks have shown that it beats the Geforce 280GTX in crysis at a price of $299(£150!), which may be worth the importing considering 280GTX's are £400 odd.

If you got any other suggestions for my small budget of £100-150 please tell Grin

Sadly im in the same boat as you.
looking for a decent card for £100 to £150 so i'd also appreciate any input.

Look at the HD3850 pro I m struggling to see the diffence, though the spec to HD4850 are not complete as far as i could find. Will have a better look later.

HD4850 gpu core 625MHz

HD3850 gpu core 720MHz

memory timing about the same

same CFAA on the HD4850

info really need is the

320 stream processing units
666 million transistors on 55nm fabrication process

if ya find this it would help. but i would save the £50 (but then im a northern tight fisted so and so)

I have a hd3850 ocuk 256mb and it was worth it. Very happy and can xcrossfire it later when something else comes out.

*tip* check your power supply has a spare 6pin or even a spare 8pin rail as these newer cards require them. If it lists two then the higher one will open up the overclock option. (found this out the hard way)

Sweet, might look at getting the latter and going crossfire with it.

nice specs for the cash.

Its a bit strange finding it hard to get any info on the streams.

This might be ATI re-branding for a quick cash influx. As that company has 600+ units so that was a bulk order and ocuk is £20 more. just a thought.

So you might be onto a bargin.

Some shocking results , even to the 3870 x 2.
