I just noticed today that theres a big flap of metal that was wrapped around the exhaust silencer and has come loose due to rust.

Its dragging on the ground so my first reaction is to pull it off.. then it occured to me that the exhaust might drop off Pfft Anyone know wtf it is? and if it needs to get repaired?

(Shows how little myself or anyone i can ring knows about cars Devil)

Shock That picture's 6 years old!!!

Anyway, pull it off, it should be alright if it is JUST the outersheath of metal. However, if it is actually a bit deeper, you will notice that you actually have a hole - it will sound like those young hoolians with their bean can pipes!

BIG THING IS - if that is the state of your muffler then it is pretty indicative of the condition of the rest of the exhaust system. Have a look underneath and check the condition of some of the weld joints . You don't want to be driving along and for part of the exhaust to snap when you go over a jolt!

try and find a local Britannia Tyres , they are pretty good for new stuff if its that rusted you might need at least two sections replacing can be £25 - £150 depends on the make and model of the car. Phone a head and see if the parts are in and price check with another local firm.

Its doing no good dragging on the ground so ya just knock the last bit off , its not worth trying to wield it back and unless its metal wrap then there's not much you could use to re attach as they get pretty hot so dont try gaffer tape it (yes i do know someone who tried this it catches fire pretty quickly)

Hehe, i never use my camera, think the date resets every time i change batteries.

I checked underneath and there were no holes in the muffler itself it was just a bit rusty. The cars pretty old now so not surprising really!

I'll have a closer look though, thanks Smile
