Word of warning - take care of your ears!
Fens
Hey guys and gals,

Just wanted to bring something to your attention, mainly for those of you that play games with a headset, play any instruments, go to clubs/gigs or use mp3 players a lot.

I was recently diagnosed with severe Tinnitus, something which I pray none of you ever have to go through. I won't dwell on it too much, please do google if you have never heard of it but trust me, it is very unpleasant.

Basically, I have put my ears through quite bit for the last 14 years or so, and am now paying the price. Now much of this was down to my lifestyle (used to go out to a lot of gigs/festivals/clubs, dj'd for years and never left home without my mp3 player) but I know for a fact that the many hours I spent on my PC over the last 6 years or so playing games, listening to tunes and watching DVD's on my headset also had a large part to play in it.

I am sure that most of you are pretty sensible about such things, but if like me you never really gave it a second thought then please do, it might save you a bit of bother years down the line. I would definately recommend taking regular breaks with your headset off, lowering the volume (headsets can be quite deceptive) and using speakers where possible. As for anyone that does go out a lot or is exposed to any excessive noise levels at work or anywhere else, invest in some decent earplugs (not the foam ones), it is worth it Smile

Awww shit that sucks Fens, I've had brief bouts of tinnitus when I've been to gigs before and it's not at all pleasant Sad Good advice, so yeah people.. turn those headsets down.. I mean is it really worth damaging your ears to catch 1 or 2 spies a night decloacking behind you? Turn that volume waaaaay down.. I'm sure your back will be fine Wink

Damn, sorry to hear that. You are completely right regarding the deceptiveness of headsets and mp3 earphones, people regularly turn the music far too high and the sound gets channeled directly into the ear.

Again I feel for you. Sure hope modern science will find a method to cure Tinnitus.

I had tinnitus for about 24 hours a few weeks ago, shot a heavy caliber rifle without earplugs... never doing that again.

My father-in-law has sever tinnitus and 98% deafness - sorry to hear you have it.

When younger there was the odd time I would wake up with ringing ears after a night out...not that often luckily.

Nowadays, I see a lot of youngsters (yes, I just used that word) with their mp3s at such a loud volume that I can hear them 30 seconds before I walk past them. However, I have an even greater problem with those little fucks who play their music out of the back of their mobile phone - usually it's rap or dance, which is silly because they can't hear the bass tune which makes up 80% of the music. So all you can hear is a repetitive high-hat and tsstttststttstttttstttsttts

Blargh, poor you, tinnitus is having a constant beeping in your isn't it?

I never play games on full volume, but I always listen to my iPod on highest volume, but being the riskful, "in-the-now" living fuck I am, I will keep on doing it and hope that it won't happen to me..

ohhhh poor Fens. I know exactly what your talking about. A few years ago i had a Tinnitustherapy for my left ear. my doc just told me that it is an irreparable damage. Then went to a specialist who treated me with ultrasound or something. Now the ringing in my ear is still here but i cant "hear" it anymore. Sometimes when its very quite i still got a ringing in my ear that im thinking im drunk like a skunk. As you said most people dont gave athought about it, but when its too late youre fucked.
i wish you all the best and hope you get it under control Smile

Ah that sucks to hear :/
Luckily since i was a kid ive disliked to have any music/games on high volume.
Perfect volume is when i can hear the game/music/tv and talk to people depending on what im focusing on.
