Change the motherboard for the P45 chipset asus P5Q: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpro...otherboard

what does he solely use the PC for? might be pointless going for a quad if all hes going to use it for is games (E8400 ftw if gaming)

what size screen does he use? if he uses 1920x1200+ then go for a 4870, if lower though then thats fine

Unless hes a serious overclocker the ram might be slightly overkill too, perhaps go for the OCZ 6400 ram, can still get good speeds out of it beyond its stock rating and saves a few bob

last but not least, this is probably just a personal thing but im not a big fan of tagan since there days of ticking PSUs last year, enermax comes highly recommended from me though

Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £82 inc Vat

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpro...otherboard

8 Phase power, better audio, PCI-E 2.0

Gorillas just a copy cat Grin

I'm using the asus P5Q at the moment, was one of the first bunch of people to buy it soon as it came in stock (brave really considering new chipsets are quite hit and miss lol) and im VERY happy with it, better than my previous board (Gigabyte P35 DS4)

Mr G
great advice on the mobo cheers dudes make sense.

will look over the psu at more depth used to hiper myself, wanted something diffrent.

how come 2die over 4die quads?

screen later i think

Edited by Mr G on 07-07-2008 19:11

Bios
theres only one game on the market that uses more than 2dies (hell alot dont even use 2!) and thats supreme commander.... at least that was the case last time i checked

2die chips for the same price are faster, you get more out of the extra clock speed than you do out of the extra cores for games (3dmark will lie to you on this!) - though if you do things like video encoding etc then it does become more sensible to go quad

PSUs are a difficult choice alot of the time, need to look at reviews really, only reason i recommend enermax is i know there PSUs are high quality, ive never heard of any disaster stories and ive had mine for nearly 2 years and its perfect (enermax noisetaker 600w)

a little bit overkill for that system though dude, wouldnt need anything over a 600w supply, just needs a decent quality one

best PSU i can recommend, one that comes highly recommended from many sources: http://www.overcl...r%20Supply

PC&C are without a doubt one of the best brands around for PSUs, same PSUs the top overclockers like chilly1, fugger etc use

Fuckme - if I told you my system specs you'd probably die from laughter. But, it's hard to spend money on yourself when you paying for 3 kids - arghhhh.

Seriously though, I've heard that if I bought a 8800GT or similar, I could plug it into my PCIe (not 2.0) and it should be alright - any pro comments. In anycase, it would be better than my 6 cough 6 cough 0 cough 0, regardless of a little slow down?

if its socket 775 naughtyme then get an E2180 (or better) as well as an 8800GT and you'll be laughing

if its not a socket 775 chipnboard though then i wouldnt bother with the new GPU till you've done a bit of a motherboard/cpu/ram combo overhaul

Problem is - as I said, I cannot afford all that stuff. My thinking was that even if I cannot use the GPU to its "full" potential, I could at least see some improvement until I am able to afford the other upgrades....no?

true true, though source games do benefit more from a better CPU overall i think the graphics card would give you a vast improvement over a 6600, i was using a 6600 as a temporary card until me 4870 arrived and with an overclocked E2180 + 4GB ram and low settings it was perfectly playable

so yea id say go for it, how much money do you have to spend by the way?

Let's just say enough to buy the GPU at the moment...birthday money. August is out - service, MOT, tax for car. September new school term - £££. OCtober start of Christmas shopping. So prob. Jan before I can afford any other upgrades.

sell your children
pimp out the wife (wheres ma money bitch?)
buy new computer bits
game on

its all about priorities mate

Better to sell the childrens organs, healthy human parts can make more than whole ones (plus if you sell them in the right order you might be able to fund it without losing them all). Plus that cuts your budget way down GrinShock
