London ISP for a future-ex Froggie?
palad1
Hello,

[Some of you may have noticed another annoying TF2 n00b lately, well, that's me... Yup, the guy bumping into spies and turning around, it's sad ]

I'm going to move to London in a couple of month, and was wondering if you could point me to a 'Good' ISP.

Here's what I'd expect [based on what we have in france]
1- sub 80ms ping
2- available all day long [see #1 Grin]
3- free voip to France
4- set-top box [bonus points if one can stream DivX on the thing Grin]

Thanks a lot for the tips!
Cheers,
Palad1

welcome to the boards Palad1, everyone was a tf2 noob ones, except for fuzz who was born with a rocket launcher in his hands.

London should have good cable coverage so the big companies are Virgin, BT and i would also add Sky as my sister has a vv good deal with them for TV, phone and internet:

Virgin -> http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websa...ce.do?id=2
BT -> http://www.bt.com/
Sky -> http://broadband.sky.com/

Just so you're aware i use BeThere ADSL (https://www.bethere.co.uk/) who have been quite fantastic so far. The hardware they provide however isnt up to the task for gaming imho. I used my own router insted of the bebox they provide.

Also bear in mind that Phrom might be rearig its ugly head at somepoint. BT and Virgin have signed up to it and will be making it "opt out" (boo) as opposed to carphone wearhouse, who have signed up and will make it "opt in".

From personal experience i had a nightmare with Pipex (went bad after Tiscalli took over) and Vrigin (adsl, not sure about how their cable is). Virgin ADSL doesnt throttle in the evenings but they do assign game traffic a low priority, so it basically ends with a ping of 100-200 insted of the 30 i got during the day.. I would strongly advice staying away from those three if you can help it.

I like my Entanet reseller - Vivaciti - stirling performance for what I pay. And yes, it is capped, but it's 30Gb for the month (peak time), 330Gb for the month (off-peak). No throttling.

We use the sky package agrippa described, and seems to do the trick. Something like £25 per month for uncapped use up to 8mbit, a sky subscription and phone line. Comes with a rebranded netgear router which works well, but obviously its not ideal if you don't want satellite tv/a phone supplier.

edit: when i say 'up to 8mbit' I mean that supposedly they will give you as much as your line can take, probably 8mbit in london I would guess. I only get about 2 down here Sad

I was with o2 because i couldnt get cable where i was, so it had to be through my phone line.
It was an 8mb deal, and i actually consistently got 8mb.
It was £7.50 for me because of having an o2 contract, not sure of the price if you dont.
worth checking out too if you want something that you actually get what they advertise.

Thanks for the info, guys and gals.

Lots of little things I'll have to get used to in the UK.

Should I create a thread asking advice about Pub etiquette or proper use of the term "Bloody" vs "Soddin'" or will this one do? Sickmilewinkgrin:

You can keep to the same thread if you wish..

Although "sod off" I have replaced this in my vocabulary with "f*ck off yoghurt cock"
